As a journalist, I tend to write songs based on real events.
Kandahar I wrote to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of my friend and colleague Michelle Lang, who was killed Dec. 30, 2009 while on assignment in Afghanistan.
Bootlegger's Bride is the true story of the only woman hanged in Alberta, for a murder in the Crowsnest Pass in the 1920s. It won second place for best Canadian song in the 2010 Calgary Folk Music Festival Songwriting Competition.
Pit Pony is about the small horses that were used to haul coal out the mines in Western Canada. They often were handled by boys as young and eight an 10 years old who were orphaned and sent to work in exchange for their care. The ponies often spent their entire lives underground.
